A request for a smooth wall can mean different things to different people. Finish expectations should be discussed with the specified decoration and lighting conditions before the scope is priced. The Gypsum Association’s finish-level guidance provides a common vocabulary for that discussion.

Explain the final appearance

Identify the intended finish, areas with demanding light and any sample or mock-up requirements set by the project team. A general photograph is not a specification. Ask the designer and painting trade to coordinate the expected result with the drywall finish described in the documents.

Separate the trade responsibilities

Clarify preparation, joint treatment, priming, painting and acceptance responsibilities. Do not assume that a drywall package includes the complete decoration system. A readable scope makes the transition between trades clearer and reduces arguments about what smooth was meant to include.

Agree how the work is reviewed

Use the project’s approved review process and conditions rather than judging a surface only from an unusual temporary light position. Record the agreed finish and any samples. This guide explains briefing questions; it does not replace the applicable specification or finish-level publication.

Bring these four points to the conversation

  • Decoration
  • Lighting context
  • Trade boundaries
  • Review conditions

Turn the discussion into a written record

Keep a short record of decoration, lighting context, trade boundaries and review conditions. Separate confirmed information from assumptions and list the questions that still need the responsible company or design professional. Send the current version with your drawings or photographs so later decisions can be traced back to the same brief, rather than comparing conversations based on different information.
